The Indian National anthem, composed originally in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, was adopted in its Hindi version by the Constituent Assembly as the National Anthem of India on 24 January 1950. It was first sung 27 December 1911 at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. The complete song consists of five stanzas. The lyrics were rendered into English by Tagore himself.

Thou are the ruler of the minds of all people, dispenser of India’s destiny.

The name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujurat and Maratha. Of the Dravid and Orissa and Bengal.

It Echoes in the hills of Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of Yamuna and Ganga and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea.

They pray for your blessing and sing thy praise. The salvation of all peaople is thy hand, thou dispenser of India’s destiny. Victory, Victory, Victory to thee.

Congratulations to all Indians!

I don’t know the criteria used by UNESCO to pick the best national anthem by I believe, this is only fair to concede defeat.

Our Ugandan national anthem is also a great one, greatly reflecting the Greatest law of loving God and neighbour.

==============Uganda Anthem

Oh Uganda may God uphold thee,
We lay our future in thy hand,
United free for liberty
Together we’ll always stand.
Oh Uganda the land of freedom,

Our love and labour we give,
And with neighbours all,
At our country’s call
In peace and friendship we’ll live.

Oh Uganda! the land that feeds us,
By sun and fertile soil grown,
For our own dear land,
We shall always stand,
The pearl of Africa’s Crown.

For every person, the national anthem of his country is the best no matter what international award or recognition it got. I guess choosing the Indian National Anthem as the best of them all has something to do with the lyrics. It is one rare non-nationalist, non-militarist national anthem.

When translated in English, the composition is as follows:

O! Dispenser of India's destiny, thou art the ruler of the minds of all people[8]
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, the Maratha country,
in the Dravida country, Utkala and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas,
it mingles in the rhapsodies of the pure waters of Yamuna and the Ganges.
They chant only thy name.
They seek only thy auspicious blessings.
They sing only the glory of thy victory.
The salvation of all people waits in thy hands,
O! Dispenser of India's destiny, thou art the ruler of the minds of all people
Victory to thee, Victory to thee, Victory to thee,
Victory, Victory, Victory, Victory to thee!.

Some trivia about the anthem and its composer:

1. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore is the world's only poet/composer whose work is the national anthems of two countries - India and Bangladesh. Amar Sonar Bangla (My Golden Bengal) is the other composition which is now the Bangladesh National Anthem.

2. The original Jana Gana Mana was composed precisely at the time of the coronation of King George V of Britain in December 1911 and is widely considered to be a paean in praise of him.

3. Out of the five stanzas of the original composition, only the first stanza is the Indian National Anthem.

The composition may be controversial or may not be liked by one and all but I really like the tune of our national anthem. The tune is one of the best that I have ever heard. It is simply great to hear over and over again.

The congrats should go to the composer of Jana Gana Mana, the people who elected it to be our national anthem and finally the composer of the tune that eventually has struck a billion Indian hearts and now reaching to people of far away countries.
