You know Mahatma Gandhi was the first real Indian Textile designer & fashion designer, his style was too different and classic, the person who contributed to the progress or growth of Indian cotton around India and gave the mass movement against the British a new twist. Mahatma Gandhi who Professionally advocate &freedom fighter as well ,who used to worn Khadi, Self made hand woven cotton.2727371030049914608hicine_th_JOzVx_16234

Gandhijee achieved two things, By advertised Khadi, which later became a symbol of Congress & Indian unity, gave Indian people the much needed self certainty & self dependency. Only he, amongst the galaxy of other Indian leaders of the time thought that people should be self-reliant before going for the fight for self-rule, i.e. swarajya. If we continue to use foreign made goods, then our economy will never be self sufficient and self reliant. He wrote ” Swaraj (self-rule) without swadeshi (country made Products) is a lifeless corpse and if Swadeshi is the soul of Swaraj, khadi is the most vital & most essential part of swedeshi.”

The weaving of khadi fabric is preceded by the spinning of the thread on the charkha after which it goes to the bobbin winder, warper, sizer and finally the weaver. While spinning is organized by the khadi Board, weaving is done by the weaver at his home in an individual capacity. Spinning is mostly done by the girls and women in the villages, while weaving is dominated by men. Because of the work involved, the price of the khadi cloth when it reaches the shops is more than that of the mill or hand loom cloth. Ckarkha is the basic Concept of hand weaving that invented in India.

Gandhi’s basic thought was making people self sufficient and to certain extent he succeeded in lifting their standard & self dependent and when people had an independent source of extra income, their condition improved and they could live peacefully without any economical problem and mental stretched in life.....

I don’t doubt the textile revolution brought in by the Mahatma, but calling him the ’first and real designer’ would be dishonoring all those who came before him.

Indian textiles and designs have been famous throughout history. History may not remember the names of those designers, but that doesn’t make them less.

No doubt, Mahatma Gandhi urged Indians to throw out their British colonial rulers with two weapons — non-violence and hand spun cloth. But this inclusion of Khadi doesn’t qualify him to be a fashion designer; he is above all such classifications.

That is a new perspective on Mahatma Gandhi. What is amazing is he continues to intrigue people and manages to even become a brand name(Gandhigiri) in the modern world. But unfortunately we don’t realise his philosophy behind the Khadi movement. His minimalist approach is so out of context in consumer-driven fashion conscious world.
Yet can’t deny Khadi is a style statement today.

Well his Khadi movement was about being self sufficient and providing jobs to Indian people.

It’s funny that scenario has changed now, all brands of clothes get their clothes made in India, no matter if it’s khadi or not. So today, supporting Khadi is as essential as supporting Jeans etc :P

The textile revolution brought in by the Mahatma is more about introducing the concept of self dependency in the people of his country rather than about fashion designing and textile designing.

I would like to draw attention to the line “By advertised Khadi…” from the article. Is using the word advertising justified for so noble a cause?

Umm...well yea it kinda is ok. I mean, advertising is about spreading the message to the masses and that’s what he did.

But I must add that his move to ”advertise Khadi” was in favor of others and wasnt a way of making money. It should be compared to those ads of today trhat say ”issued in public interest” :P

What apparently many other freedom fighters did was probably much more intensive than what Mahatma Gandhi did. But analysing in true sense we find that what he actually did was done by none other - He united and infused a spirit of self confidence and self dependence. The introduction of Khadi was a way to this objective.
Khadi - the idea in itself indicates the the brain of a brilliant textile designer. But to say if he was real or first is a matter of debate. Historically speaking India faced slavery for around 400 years and this is more than sufficient period for any civilization to lose its very concept. The comman man dress of people at that time was lungi(for men) and saari for women which seen in depth in basically a long piece of plain cloth without much engineering. Who invented the other classical Indian traditional dresses is really a question no one can answer as they have been there since time immemorial.
So What Khadi did was exactly similar - something invented using traditional knowledge for the aim of self dependence and never before was such a work done under a single united banner.
Hence describing him as a first real textile designer is absolutely correct but simultaneously also applying the tag of a fashion designer is not appropriate reason being Khadi was not a fasion statement then(atleast).
