Yet can’t deny Khadi is a style statement today.

Well his Khadi movement was about being self sufficient and providing jobs to Indian people.

It’s funny that scenario has changed now, all brands of clothes get their clothes made in India, no matter if it’s khadi or not. So today, supporting Khadi is as essential as supporting Jeans etc :P

The textile revolution brought in by the Mahatma is more about introducing the concept of self dependency in the people of his country rather than about fashion designing and textile designing.

I would like to draw attention to the line “By advertised Khadi…” from the article. Is using the word advertising justified for so noble a cause?

Umm...well yea it kinda is ok. I mean, advertising is about spreading the message to the masses and that’s what he did.

But I must add that his move to ”advertise Khadi” was in favor of others and wasnt a way of making money. It should be compared to those ads of today trhat say ”issued in public interest” :P

What apparently many other freedom fighters did was probably much more intensive than what Mahatma Gandhi did. But analysing in true sense we find that what he actually did was done by none other - He united and infused a spirit of self confidence and self dependence. The introduction of Khadi was a way to this objective.
Khadi - the idea in itself indicates the the brain of a brilliant textile designer. But to say if he was real or first is a matter of debate. Historically speaking India faced slavery for around 400 years and this is more than sufficient period for any civilization to lose its very concept. The comman man dress of people at that time was lungi(for men) and saari for women which seen in depth in basically a long piece of plain cloth without much engineering. Who invented the other classical Indian traditional dresses is really a question no one can answer as they have been there since time immemorial.
So What Khadi did was exactly similar - something invented using traditional knowledge for the aim of self dependence and never before was such a work done under a single united banner.
Hence describing him as a first real textile designer is absolutely correct but simultaneously also applying the tag of a fashion designer is not appropriate reason being Khadi was not a fasion statement then(atleast).
